IFMS days 2010 in Italy

The interesting, friendly and ceremonial IFMS Days, taking place between 16 and 19 September 2010, were attended by delegations from Italy, Germany, Slovenia, Spain and Switzerland and by IFMS Secretary General, Brigadier Bojan Pograjc. The event activities took place in Lavarone, Trento, on Mount Ortigara and in Bassano del Grappa in Italy. Our Italian colleagues succeeded in combining a respectful memory of soldiers who lost their lives in the mountains, the remembrance of mountain warfare and the enhancement of friendly ties between mountain soldiers as well as in solemn allegiance to the values of mountain soldiers. The weather was not favourable either to the organizers of this event or the participants from the five countries. However, the IFMS Days 2010 will be remembered as one of the most successful in the history of this event.

Initially, the participants of the gathering visited the historic town of Trento, known also among mountain soldiers for its international mountain film festival. Later, at the WWI military cemetery, the participants of IFMS Days honoured the memory of hundreds of soldiers who were killed at the end of the war.

Rainy weather continued even during the second day of IFMS Days, which included visits to the WWI battlefields on Mount Ortigara. The entire area of Mount Ortigara is nicely arranged as an attractive eco-museum where members of the local section of the Italian National Alpini Association (ANA) spent thousands of hours of volunteer work. This project was additionally financed by the EU.

The evening of the second day ended with a formal dinner and the awarding of the "13. Premio IFMS", which was presented by the ANA to its most successful section in the field of military history studies. This year, the award was given to the ANA section from Azzano San Paolo near Bergamo.

The third day of IFMS Days ended with the parade of the 3rd ANA Regional Association in Bassano del Grappa. Almost 40,000 ANA members took part in this parade.

Furthermore, as part of the IFMS Days 2010, the IFMS Executive Committee met during an informal meeting.
